Seek Justice

Justice is rare in our days, and the courts are not a place to look for justice.

When you look at our system of courts you will find legal. Legal, however, is much different than justice. When the Supreme Court in Roe v Wade declared child sacrifice to be a protected right, that is legal. To declare a baby a non-person is not justice. It is far from it.

Torah outlines justice at nearly every turn, yet we must continue to ask “What does living according to Torah look like in a nation that practices child sacrifice?” Yeshua, aka Jesus kept Torah, all of it. So if we are to imitate him (see 1 John 2:5-6) what should we look like?

Herman Bovnick has written extensively on biblical justice and he notes that

God stands against “perverting the justice due the poor… slaying the innocent and righteous… accepting bribes…. oppressing the alien, the widow, and the orphan…” God “raises them to a position of honor and well-being… [D]oing justice with an eye to the needy becomes an act [also] of grace and mercy.” And therefore, God’s restorative justice “is not, like his anger, opposed to his steadfast love but is closely akin and synonymous with it.” His justice is “simultaneously the manifestation of his grace (Psalm 97:11-12; 112:3-6; 116:5; 118:15-19).” Herman Bavinck, John Bolt, and John Vriend, Reformed Dogmatics: God and Creation, vol. 2 Baker Academic, 2004, 223 – 224.

Further, what is needed in justice was captured by Shane Claiborne, Jonathan Wilson- Hartgrove, & Enuma Okoro in their book Common Prayer, A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals:

Peace is not just about the absence of conflict; it’s also about the presence of justice.  A counterfeit peace exists when people are pacified or distracted or so beat up and tired of fighting that all seems calm. But true peace does not exist until there is justice, restoration, forgiveness.

Peacemaking doesn’t mean passivity. It is the act of interrupting injustice without mirroring injustice, the act of disarming evil without destroying the evildoer, the act of finding a third way that is neither fight nor flight but the careful, arduous pursuit of reconciliation and justice. It is about a revolution of love that is big enough to set both the oppressed and the oppressors free.

No one modeled that better than Yeshua who was and is able to set both the oppressed and the oppressor free because His love is big enough.

Proclaiming Truth to the Authorities

What is our responsibility to the Civil Magistrates who make our laws? The same as everyone else who is a neighbor.

Maybe you don’t get involved in politics. Yeshua did – he confronted the civil magistrates even when he knew he would be put to death. Are you afraid, in denial, hiding behind your gatherings? Or are you willing to take God’s Law, Torah – to those who are under that Law:

Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. Rom 3:19 ESV

The whole world includes the civil magistrates. Watch this and then ask yourself, have I avoided my responsibility?
